Sunrise for B

We got our girl married off last night. She was stunning; graceful and sleek in her off-the-shoulder gown. Relaxed and laughing and comfortable in her own skin. That’s what a bride in her 40’s should look like.

She didn’t plan to be a bride at this stage in her life. This was not a chapter she ever anticipated the first time wore a beautiful white dress. She had some detours. Some terrifying, heartbreaking, holy-shit-what-now moments. She made tough decisions and owned her life. She prioritized her children at every step on a long and circuitous path to get to this moment.

She’s not a silly frivolous person. Lord knows she couldn’t have handled what life threw at her if she had been. There’s a lot to her. She’s a thinker. A self-contained island of pragmatism. She seeks the level. That’s why her ebullience last night was so magical.

To get to see a woman like this, who navigated herself and her children though hell and back, laughing and dancing and being loved so well by this good man, is a gift for the rest of us. A testament of faith. Gratitude for this warm pink and gold sunrise after so many dark nights.

She deserves all that and more. Dancing with her people, us singing every word to “Ice Ice Baby” because of course we are. Seeing her children and his together, almost grown but not quite, taking selfies and hugging and living totally in the moment.

She’s got her sunrise now. She’s starting her next chapter. And it is truly a privilege to see. We were rooting for you, B. We love you so much.
